The First Girl Pitcher

In the year 1931 The great depression hit Chattanooga, Tennessee a lot of people lost their jobs. One of the only things that put a smile on people’s faces was to go to a baseball game. Something was different about this. On April 2, 1931 for the first time in history a girl was going to pitch at a major league game! That girls name was Jackie Mitchell. At the age of seventeen she was starting pitcher on the Chattanooga, Look Outs. That game the Look Outs were playing the New York Yankees. That ment that she was going to have to pitch against some of the best players in the league. Those players are Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig. When Babe Ruth came  up to bat she got to two strikes on him.Babe was so blown away that he asked the umpire to check the ball but the ball was fine so she did one more pitch and struck out Babe Ruth. Then the second person came up  too bat and that was Lou Gehrig. She struck him out too! She amazed many people that day. She is the reason why we have softball today! She shows that girls can do anything even when a lot of people think they can’t.
